Paste review: Clipboard manager's stunning UI helps overcome its lack of features

Ever since the earliest days of the Macintosh, the clipboard has been an indispensable part of our workflow. It’s one of the unsung heroes of the modern desktop, but the ephemeral nature of the copy-and-paste model has trained us to immediately utilize the things that land on our clipboards, forcing us to constantly be aware of how we’re use it. Despite its remarkable usefulness, the clipboard hasn’t seen much in the way of innovation at the system level, relying instead on hacks and utilities to unlock its full potential.

Amazon Echo update lets you shop without raising a finger

Amazon’s Echo connected speaker is an unusual product for the online retail giant, if only because it hasn’t included a way to buy stuff.

That’s changing with the latest update for Echo, which lets users bark out orders to restock anything they’ve previously bought through Amazon Prime. All that’s required is the device’s wake-up word (“Alexa” by default) followed by “re-order [item name].” Echo then finds the item and asks for confirmation to buy it, either with a “yes” or a voice code.

Shopping isn’t strictly restricted to past purchases. If Echo doesn’t find the item in the user’s order history, but can recommend something similar, it’ll tell users the name and price before giving them the option to buy it. If it doesn’t find anything, it’ll add the item name to the user’s shopping list. (You can also say “Alexa, cancel order” if you’ve bought something by accident.)

Broadcom hardware platform gains support for Apple's HomeKit

Apple’s efforts to allow people to control household appliances from their iPhones through the company’s HomeKit framework are gaining momentum.

Chip maker Broadcom announced Tuesday that the SDK for its WICED hardware platform, which allows manufacturers to build so-called smart devices that can connect to the Internet, is fully compliant with HomeKit. The HomeKit protocols from Apple allow manufacturers to create products that can be controlled from an iOS device.

For example, if a smart lock was integrated with HomeKit, people could use an app on their iPhones or speak a command to Siri, Apple’s voice-controlled virtual assistant, to unlock a door. Using Siri to handle voice commands when a person isn’t in his house requires an Apple TV, which works as a gateway to a home network.-  Fred O'Connor

The PowerBook G4 Titanium still looks great next to today's MacBook Air

I remember spending a lot of time in my early teenage years being disappointed that films, books, music and comedy I’d been told were staggeringly innovative and utterly amazing actually struck me as lame and clichéd when I made time to watch, read and listen to them. Then one day, realization dawned: the only reason they seemed so dull to me was thateverything since had copied them.

So it is with the original PowerBook G4. To modern eyes, it might just look like a pretty generic laptop. Put it next to the 2008 15-inch MacBook Pro I’m typing this on, and they look more similar than they look different.
